Telengana Ashadhamasa Bonalu, Mahakali Jatara is one of the biggest cultural festivities (falls in the month of July (In Ashadha Masam) )happen every year with much traditional fervor in the city of Hyderabad. This year Bonalu festival will kick start from 3rd of July 2011 in Golconda ,following secunderbad on 17th July , Old City on 24th July 2011.

Hyderabad city is geared up for Bonalu 2011 festivities with Government making special arrangements for the festival.Geetha Reddy - Hyderabad Incharge of Congress Party and also the Minister for Major Industries has announced that city roads will go for a facelift and all important Mahankali temples will be decked up for the festival.All potholes will be cleared and adequate water supply will be arranged during the procession.She also ensured that uniterrupted power supply will be given to all important temples during the festival.She also said in meeting conducted in Hyderabad that she would try her best to make the government announce it as a state festival.
NO Ambari (Elephant) Procession this time?
Ambari procession is a special attraction in the mass procession on the concluding day of the festival every year.Ambari ( Elephant) being taken from Nehru Zoological park used to be decked up and taken out with Ghatam on it in the procession every year.This time Nehru Zoopark officials refused to provide Ambari for the festival on the pretext of a government order directing the zoo officials not to use animals for the processions and declined the request from temple committee as per the reports
Even though Bonalu Mahakali Jatara is celebrated in nook and corner of the region of Telengana ,The major and mass process of Mahankali takes places in Hyderabad where in as many as some 10-20 lakhs people from across India participate in it.
Bonalu festival & Mahakali Jatara happen in two phases in Hyderabad.Bonalu festival celebrations kick start with Ujjain Mahankali temple of Secunderabad first and old city of Hyderabad take the cue the very next week.Bonalu falls on Sunday following farewell of the event i.e Rangam etc on Monday.
This year Ujjain Mahankali Bonalu festival & Mahakali Jatara falling on 17th July and Rangam event follows the very next day.
In old city of Hyderabad Bonalu festival & Mahakali Jatara celebrations will kick start on 17th and continue till 25th July 2011.The main Bonalu festival happens on 24th of July and Rangam event follows the very next week.
Laldarwaza Mahankali Temple,Akkanna Madanna Temple, Gowlipura Bharat Mata Temple,Sultanshahi Jagadamba temple, Shalibanda Mutyalamma Temple, Mir-Alam Mandi Mahankali Temple,Uppuguda, Aliabad Mahankali temple are the main temples in Old city where the Bonalu festival takes place with much traditional fervor.All areas in old city look much vibrant with telangana style songs,Dances of Potha rajulu,Ghatam Procession etc.
